Playful People Productions is casting experienced adult actors, male dancers and musicians for their Winter 2017 production of
Fiddler On The Roof.

We’re looking for experienced adult actors to play a few of the key roles, as well as experienced male dancers. And we’re looking for a few experienced musicians. If you are interested and you have lots of experience and want to “pay it forward” – please audition. This is a workshop production filled with eager participants who signed up to learn more about the art of musical theatre storytelling. Experienced Actors/Dancers and Musicians, if cast, will be asked to support the mission of the organization, which is to be kind. There is no pay, only play with the great group of people at Playful People Productions. Experienced Actors and Musicians would be considered Teaching Artists because they will be leading by example.

Prepare 16 bars of a Broadway Show Tune. Bring sheet music in your own key. A pianist will be provided. (Please, no pop songs.) Also, come prepared to learn a movement combination.

The following roles are open:

TEVYE, The Dairyman
Playing Age: Adult
Vocal Range: Tenor/Baritone (Ab2 to F5)
As the narrator and main character of this story, Tevye is the father of five daughters, an impoverished milkman, a leader in his Jewish community, and husband to the headstrong Golde. He is faced with struggles to uphold the traditions of his people, especially through the marriages of his daughters. Tevye is a likeable, hard-working, pious man who sees the positive side of life. Strong patriarch but gentle father of his daughters who he has raised according to the Scriptures. He is humorous and relaxed, but when pushed, can show stubbornness and rage.

GOLDE, Tevye’s Wife
Playing Age: Adult
Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano (A3 to Eb5)
As Tevye’s wife of twenty-five years and mother of his five daughters, Golde is an efficient helpmate and traditionalist, faced with changes of a “new world.” She has a sharp tongue and wit. Her love of family helps her face the challenges that her family encounters. Golde is the real strength behind Tevye, the one who keeps the household going. She is very concerned that her daughters make good matches and have easier lives than she and Tevye have had.

YENTE, the Matchmaker
Playing Age: Adult
Vocal Range: Soprano/Alto (F3 to F5)
The village’s matchmaker and busybody. Yente is the middle-aged widow who matches up the young people of the village in the hopes that they will marry. She knows all the news of the town.

LAZAR WOLF, The Butcher
Playing Age: Adult
Vocal Range: Baritone (C3 to F#4)
A rich butcher, widower of Fruma-Sarah, and the man Yente the matchmaker sets as a match for Tzeitel. Lazar is the town’s wealthiest citizen and is the same age, if not older, than Tevye. He wants to marry, by traditional parental agreement, Tevye’s daughter, Tzeitel. Promising to give her a good & secure life.

THE CONSTABLE, a Russian
Playing Age: Adult
Non-singing Role
A local Russian official, the constable, though he has a good relationship with Tevye, follows his orders to perform an “unofficial demonstration” during Tzeitel and Motel’s wedding, and then forces all the Jewish villagers to leave Anatevka. This Russian military official stationed near Anatevka, knows the villagers well, and even likes some of them, particularly Tevye. But these superficial relationships don’t prevent him from carrying out violence against the people.

THE RABBI, Anatevka’s Jewish Spiritual Leader
Playing Age: Adult
The voice of reason. He is in several other scenes and musical numbers.

GRANDMA TZEITEL
Playing Age: Adult
Vocal Range: Mezzo/Alto (C#4 to D5)
Grandma Tzeitel is a ghost figure who appears in the Dream Scene and has a wonderful solo, endorsing the marriage of Tzeitel to Motel. This actress will also appear as a villager. She is in several other scenes and musical numbers.

FRUMA-SARAH
Playing Age: Adult
Vocal Range: Mezzo/Alto (C4 to Eb5)
Fruma-Sarah is also a ghost figure who appears in the Dream Scene. She portrays Lazar Wolf’s departed wife & becomes enraged that her husband plans on marrying Tzeitel. This actress will also appear as a villager. She is in several other scenes and musical numbers.

SHANDEL, the Mother of Motel
Playing Age: Adult She has a very funny scene in Act I. She is also in several other scenes and musical numbers.

RUSSIAN PRIEST
Playing Age: Adult
Christian spiritual leader. Will also play a villager. He is in several other scenes and musical numbers.

THE FIDDLER, Dancer and Mime
Playing Age: Adult
The Fiddler represents the tradition of the Jewish People. The Fiddler is seen from the very beginning and throughout the show. It is a non-speaking role. The Fiddler will also mime and dance; playing the violin throughout the show. We would like to cast an actual violinist in the role.

MOTEL, The Tailor
Playing Age: Young Adult
Vocal Range: Tenor (E3 to F#4)
An impoverished tailor and secretly pledged to Tzeitel, Motel gathers the courage to ask Tevye for her hand in marriage. He feels “even a poor tailor is entitled to some happiness.” They marry and start a family, which also includes the “new arrival” of a sewing machine. Motel is a sensitive, nervous but lovable young man who breaks with tradition by seeking the hand of his childhood sweetheart, Tzeitel, and not only comes into his own in the process, but tests the very foundations of his religion.

PERCHIK, The Student
Playing Age: Young Adult
Vocal Range: Tenor (B2 to E4)
Perchik is a visitor to Anatevka, and therefore, an outsider. He brings with him radical new ideas that challenge the traditions. He falls for Hodel. Perchik is intense and unfailing in his commitment to his beliefs.

FYEDKA, a Russian
Playing Age: Young Adult
Mainly speaking role.
Fyedka, a strong young soldier, sees past his military obligations and falls in love with Chava. He challenges Tevye’s imposed silence towards him.

MENDEL, The Rabbi’s Son
Playing age: Young Adult
Mendel has a very funny scene with Tevye in Act I where he shows his uncertainty of the presence of Perchik in the village. He is also in several other scenes and musical numbers.

TO LIFE SOLOIST, a Russian
Playing age: Young Adult
Vocal Range: Tenor (Must be able to sing an Ab5 and sustain a G4)
Russian soloist sings the solo in the musical number, “TO LIFE”. He is in several other scenes and musical numbers.

SASHA, a Russian
Playing age: Young Adult
Fyedka’s Russian friend who feels contempt towards the Jews of Anatevka. May also double as a villager in some scenes. He is in several other scenes and musical numbers.

BORIS, a Russian
Playing age: Young Adult
Fyedka’s Russian friend. May also double as a villager in some scenes. Part of chorus. He is in several other scenes and musical numbers.

NACHUM, The Beggar
Playing age: Adult
Nachum has a very funny scene in “Tradition”. He will also play a villager as well as a bottle dancer. He is in several other scenes and musical numbers.

YUSSEL, The Town Hatter
Playing age: Adult
Has a scene with Motel in Act I. He is in several other scenes and musical numbers. Yussel will also play a villager and possibly a bottle dancer.

MORDCHA, The Innkeeper
Playing age: Adult
Mordcha runs the bar in town and is everyone’s friend. Good comedic acting role and part of chorus. He is the Emcee at Tzeitel’s wedding. He is in several other scenes and musical numbers.

AVRAM, The Bookseller
Playing age: Young Adult
Avram runs the bookshop in town and keeps the town advised of all of the news in the area. Good character role and part of chorus. He is in several other scenes and musical numbers.

We are also seeking MALE DANCERS to dance in the following musical numbers: Tradition, To Life, The Wedding Dance, The Bottle Dance, The Dream as well as play supporting character roles and sing in the chorus.

Musicians interested in auditioning for Fiddler On The Roof, please email info@artiststheatre.com to schedule your appointment. If you are not available during these times, please email us and we will try to arrange a time when you are available. Prepare a piece of music no longer than 2 minutes that shows off your skills. You may be asked to sight read a short piece of music from Fiddler On The Roof. Musicians will rehearse in January and February. The schedule and location are to be determined.

We are seeking the following musicians to play the show on stage during our production. We will have a piano or keyboard and a trap set (drums) at the audition. All other instruments must be provided by the auditionee.
